Brooksville has a rich history
which dates back to the early years of our country.
Many of the
early inhabitants of the area, the Timucua and Calusa Indians were
killed by explorers who came to Florida. The county in which
Brooksville is located was named after Hernando De Soto, who was one
of the explorers that visited the area. The history books note that
many tribes of Native Americans came to Florida and formed the
Seminole tribe. They were given this portion of Florida as a
reservation; however, the Government later decided they wanted
the land back and the war with the Seminoles followed.
When the Armed Occupational Act of
1842 was passed, it offered to give settlers 160 acres of land if
they agreed to live on it for five years, cultivate five acres, and
build a dwelling on it. Settlers also had to agree that they would
help protect the land in this part of Florida from the Indians.
Hernando became a county in 1843. This was two years before
Florida became a state. The county seat was moved to Brooksville
during the 1850's due to its centralized location. Brooksville
was originally known as Melendez. Maps printed in 1855 show the town
of Melendez being the Capitol of Benton County. (The name of
Hernando County was changed to Benton and then back to Hernando.)
Fort DeSoto, a military fort was established about 1840 to help
protect white settlers from the Indians, was located at the
northeast edge of present day Brooksville. The fort served as a
trading post for early settlers and was a regular stop on the
Concord Stage Coach Line which ran from Palatka to Tampa. At this
point in history, Brooksville assumed a more important role than
ever before. Hernando County at that time was much larger than it is
today because it once included the land that now is known as Pasco
and Citrus counties
Today, Brooksville is a very
ethnically diverse community. There are many new shopping
centers and restaurants as well as older local favorites.
There are also numerous historical sites that have been preserved to
keep the history of Brooksville alive. With the development of
the Suncoast Expressway, there has been a dramatic increase of
interest in Brooksville. There is only a 40 minute drive to
Tampa, which makes it an ideal location to have the ability to work
in the city and drive home to a quiet town. Brooksville really
has that small town atmosphere of friendly people and no traffic
congestion. Brooksville is also only located about 20 minutes from
the beach. There are beautiful golfing communities currently
in the building phases, which makes Brooksville the ideal
investment.
