One
of my favorite things to do is to off-shore fish. (I am rather
good at it, if I do say so myself) I was raised with a fishing pole
in my hand and LOVE to fish for Grouper. West
Central Florida possesses some of the absolute best fishing
opportunities. With the weather being warm year-round, there
are many different types of desirable fish to be caught.
Thousands of people relocate permanently to Florida, as well as for
vacation for the sole purpose of seizing the opportunity to spend
their time just relaxing, catching fish and taking in the phenomenal
scenery. Hernando and Pasco Counties have some of the most
peaceful fishing locations, as well as the most beautiful. I
am adding some of the fishing information as a service for those
people who need to know how the fishing is prior to relocating.

Jenkins Creek Pier (Hernando County)
This was my father's
favorite place to fish. The pier here is very nice and is lit
- the fisherman are are rather friendly. It is very peaceful
here with tons of room to fish. This is a fantastic place to
take a jon-boat as well. There are lots of Ladyfish and a few
Snook. You might see the occasional alligator here, so exercise
caution.
There are restrooms.

Bayport
Park Pier (Hernando County)
Take
US 19 and go West on Cr 50
(Cortez Blvd) about 6 miles. Take a left on Cr 550 about 3 miles.
The road dead ends at pier.
Redfish, Drum, and
Sheepshead are common catches here. Mostly caught on Shrimp or Crabs
on bottom fishing rigs.
There is lots of
shade, rest rooms, and picnic tables. This is a nice park.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pine
Is. Park (Hernando County)
Take
US 19 and go West on Cr 50 (Cortez
Blvd). Then go North on 495. The pier is in the park at the
end of the road. Be sure to check the tides because this beach
is famous for the tide being so low that you can walk miles before
getting deeper water.
There Restrooms and
picnic tables. (fee to enter)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anclote River Park (Pasco County)
Limited bank fishing.
Cast netting some Pilchards around the ramp and drifting them under
the floating docks for Flounder, Snook, Trout, Grouper, Snapper,
Ladyfish and Jack Crreviewle is a good idea. If you can get a boater
to ferry you across the canal, you can wade around to the south,
around the point and north along the beach of Anclote Sound. This
may just be the best wade fishing area along the Suncoast. There are
lots of Redfish around the point along with Snook around the logs
along shore. Stay in the water, however because the shoreline
belongs to Florida Power Corporation and it is posted. Rest
rooms, Picnic tables, swimming beach, kids park, nature trail, and
historic site are also here.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anclote Gulf Park (Pasco County)
Excellent winter
fishing site. Rest rooms and picnic tables. Wade fishing N of pier.
This is probably the most popular pier along the Nature Coast in
winter time. Fishing is best on the coldest days. Limited bank
fishing along the canal. Trout, Pompano, Redfish, Drum, Jack
Crreviewle, Cobia and Bluefish are common catches in the winter. Not
good in summer.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Green Key Park
(Pasco County)
Take
US 19 to Green Key Rd to end at
the park
Located in New Port
Richey, Florida
Wade fishing for
Trout, Redfish, Ladyfish, and Jack.

Sunshine Skyway Pier(s)
(Hillsborough County)
(727) 865-0668
Old bridge spans.
North pier and South piers have facilities.
Without a doubt, the
best pier fishing on the mid-west coast of Florida. Grouper,
Mangrove Snapper, Sheepshead and assorted bottom fish are the usual
catches. Specialists fish for Tarpon, Snook, and Cobia.
There is good wade
fishing along both sides of the highway (frontage roads with parking
here) that leads to the bridge. The beach on the south side of Tampa
Bay is famous for Snook fishing. Trout, Snook, Redfish, Pompa,
Spanish Mackerel and Permit are caught by waders. Bottom conditions
vary so watch out for sticky mud. The “Stingray shuffle” is highly
recommend for waders.
Call the number listed above for current fishing conditions.

Bay.
Spanish Mackerel are
probably the most common catch off the Gulf pier and are often
caught off the bay pier too. Trout, Snook, Mangrove Snapper,
Ladyfish, Snook and Tarpon are around all summer. Wade fishing is
popular here too.
Call the number listed above for the current fishing conditions.

Clearwater (GULF) end. Then, follow the signs to the pier.
Spanish Mackerel,
Cobia, Kingfish, Bluefish, Pomapno, Jack Crreviewle, Flounder,
Trout, Sheepshead, Spadefish, Snook, Sharks and Tarpon are ofen
caught here.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Caladesi Island Park
US 19 to SR 586
(Curlew Rd) W to Dunedin, FL Causeway Blvd to end.
Board Ferry here $8.00
There is good wade
fishing both on the Gulf and on Anclote Sound. The North Point is
especially good for wade fishing. Lots of Stingrays in the early
summer so the “Stingray Shuffle” is a good idea. Trout and Snook are
the most common catches but Tarpon hook ups occur frequently.
Usually there will be only a few fishermen so you have it mostly to
yourself.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Honeymoon Island Park
The north end is great
for Pompano and Whiting. Trout and snook are caught here by folks
who know the ropes. It is effective to fish with sand fleas on an
ultra light for a stringer full of good eatin' fish. Again,
Stingrays are mighty common in the early summer - so the "The
Stingray Shuffle".
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fred Howard Park
Take
US 19
to Tarpon Avenue West to Spring then take
Tarpon Springs Blvd to end. Then, Take a left on Riverside Dr to the
park.
There is wade fishing
along causeway leading to the beach. There is also fishing off of
two small bridges.
Non- waders can sit in
a beach chair while fishing along the causeway. Early morning can be
good for Trout and an occasional Snook on a Zara Spook. Ladyfish,
Jacks, and an occasional Tarpon are caught here too. There is
usually too much activity for decent fishing after the sun comes up.
